BLACKSBURG- Two Virginia Tech men’s soccer players received ACC Weekly Honors on Tuesday. Transfer forward Marcelo Acuna was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Acuna tallied four points over the weekend as Tech defeated No. 18 Ohio State and Oakland University in the Wolstein Classic. The sophomore from San Jose, Costa Rica scored the game winner against the Buckeyes during double overtime. Acuna also netted a goal against the Golden Grizzlies later in the weekend. He was named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team and named Most Valuable Player of the weekend for his two performances. Acuna was also named Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week.
Lundgaard recorded his tenth and eleventh career shutouts this past weekend in Columbus. Against the Buckeyes, he made three saves on nine shots and held the ranked opponent scoreless. Against the Golden Grizzles, Lundgaard made another three saves in his 82 minutes of play. The junior had a diving penalty kick save against Oakland to close off his weekend. The Greenville, Delaware native was named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team after his two game performance as well.
The last time the ACC awarded the same school both weekly honors was Sept. 29, 2015. Tech will host South Florida on Sept. 2 to open their home campaign. The first kick is set for 7 p.m.
