BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team outshot the visiting No. 21 Virginia Cavaliers 13-6 but couldn’t find an equalizer as they fell, 1-0.

The Hokies are now 5-7-3 overall and 0-4-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. UVA moves to 9-3-2 on the season and 4-2-1 in the ACC.
The Hokies, who have been shorthanded as they’ve battled injuries, dominated possession in the first half but UVA scored on the only shot on goal to reach the final margin.
Tech came close several times in the second half to equalizing. The closest chance came in the 89th minute as senior Daniel Lauretano took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. His left-footed shot curled over the wall but hit off the crossbar and back into play.
In the 83rd minute, John played in a diagonal ball to a streaking Ott but his side-volley bounced past the left post and out of bounds. Ott also created a chance for himself in the 87th minute as Jeff Caldwell saved his volley.
Ricardo John hit a hard shot from just outside the box but the ball drifted just wide of the post in the 70th minute. For the game, the Hokies outshot the Cavaliers 13-6 overall with a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Tech also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Hokies had a strong first half offensively as they were able to pin Virginia back on its half of the field. Tech took a commanding 8-1 shot advantage into the break including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
Virginia was able to score on the first shot of the game and their only shot of the half. Derrick Etienne was able to dribble into the box and finish with his right foot to the far post.
The Hokies responded by outshooting them 8-0 the remainder of the half as well as having a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Merlin Baus had a pair of free kicks that were saved by Cavalier goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell. Daniel Lauretano had a right-footed effort from the edge of the box also saved by Caldwell.
The Hokies will play their final regular season home game on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host the Belmont Bruins at Thompson Field.
