CLEMSON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team fell to No. 5 Clemson on the road Friday night, 2-0.

The Hokies fall to 4-4-1 and 0-3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson moves to 8-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in ACC play.

The Hokies and Tigers battled through the first 40 minutes of the half in a physical game before Clemson got the breakthrough in the 41st minute. Oliver Shannon broke the scoreless game as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Clemson got another goal just over 10 minutes into the second half to reach the final margin.

The Hokies defense did a good job early of preventing Clemson from getting any great looks on goal as they only put three shots on frame in the half. For the game, the Tigers held a narrow edge in shots on goal at 6-4 but were ultimately able to make the most of their chances.

Clemson doubled their lead in the 57th minute as Diego Campos scored his fifth goal of the season.

Merlin Baus had a team-high two shots on goal and led the Hokies offensively. Andre Thomas and Juan Pablo Saavedra also recorded a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard made four saves in the game.

Thomas had one of the best chances to bring the Hokies back into the game late in the 81st minute as he was played into the box but Clemson’s goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell saved his shot.

Tech was previously unbeaten away from Thompson Field with a 3-0-1 record including results over two ranked teams in Xavier and Louisville.

The Hokies were playing their second straight conference game against an ACC opponent from the Atlantic Division. The Hokies hosted Boston College last Friday night.

Virginia Tech will be back in action on Tuesday night as they host West Virginia at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
