BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team outshot the visiting Eagles of Boston College but ultimately fell, 4-1.
The Hokies and Eagles, dealing with rain and hard winds, began the game with Virginia Tech taking control early. The Hokies recorded the first three shots of the game but Boston College scored the first goal off of a free kick. Ricardo John responded just 42 seconds later with a goal to even it up. From there, the Hokies couldn’t finish their chances and the Eagles got three more goals.
With the Hokies (4-3-1, 0-2-1) down 1-0 after an Abe Bibas goal off of a free kick, Tech marched down the field on the following kickoff. Alessandro Mion played a ball to Ricardo John who pushed a shot between the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net to tie it up 1-1. The goal took only 42 seconds of time.
Tech outshot Boston College (6-2-0, 2-1-0) 15-10 for the game with a 7-4 edge in the second half. John and Merlin Baus tied for a team-high three shots but the pair came up short.
The Hokies came close numerous times as they took control of the game early. In the 10th minute, Alessando Mion was played into the box, took a touch to his right around the keeper Cedric Saladin and took a shot only for Saladin to regain his position and make the save.
Seven minutes after Tech’s initial goal, Boston College got their second as Derek Lyons initial attempt was saved by Ben Lundgaard only to be tapped in by Henry Balf. Lyons again would be involved in a goal just after halftime as his header from a corner was stopped by Lundgaard and tapped the ball in himself to make it 3-1.
In the 61st minute, Som Essome's shot rolled just wide of the post. In the 68th minute, Baus had a shot sail just high as the Hokies tried to pressure the Eagles. The Eagles got the final in the 83rd minute from Tommy Garcia-Morillo.
The Hokies will have a week before the play again as they will travel to No. 6 Clemson on Oct. 2 for a 5 p.m. kickoff on ESPN3.
