BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team downed the visiting Blue Hens of Delaware on Tuesday night, 4-1.

The Hokies took a 2-1 lead into halftime and pulled away in the second half as they got two goals from Alessandro Mion. The Tech offense was able to take control as the backline shut down the Blue Hen offense, preventing Delaware from putting a single shot on goal in the second half. Som Essome and Merlin Baus also scored for the Hokies.

Tech took advantage of their shots on goal and were able to put the Blue Hens away as they scored on four of their six attempts on frame. With the victory, the Hokies improve to 4-2-1 (0-1-1) while Delaware falls to 3-4-1.

It only took until the 7th minute for Tech to get on the board as Juan Pablo Saavedra played in a corner that went across the box and found the feet of Som Essome. Essome settled and calmly beat Blai Palmi to the near post. The Blue Hens answered back three minutes later as Daniel Laguna scored off a cross to make it 1-1.

In the 41st minute, Ricardo John got in behind the defense and was taken down in the box for a penalty kick by John Schroeder who earned a red card for his tackle, leaving Delaware to play with 10 men. Merlin Baus calmly stepped up and scored the penalty kick to make it 2-1. It was the team-high fourth goal of the year for Baus.

After the break, Delaware, who had a 13-3 shot advantage in the first half, were unable to breakdown the Hokies defense. The Blue Hens got off just one shot and didn’t put a single shot on goal. It marked the second time in the last three games a Tech opponent hasn’t had a shot on goal in the second half.

In the 66th minute, John played in a cross to the back post and Mion was able to finish for his first goal of the season. Nine minutes later, Tech reached the final 4-1 margin as Mion’s attempt at the near post was initially stopped but was able to tap in his second attempt for the goal.

The Hokies had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, the shots on goal were even at 6-6 while the Blue Hens had a 14-9 advantage on total shots. Ben Lundgaard made five saves for Tech.

The Hokies will play their second straight home game on Friday night as they host Boston College at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
