BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team hosts Delaware on Tuesday night in a nonconference tilt at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 1-1, 2OT draw at No. 19 Louisville on Friday. The Hokies outshot the Cardinals, ranked as high as No. 10 in some polls, by a margin of 16-9 including 7-3 in shots on goal but were unable to find the winning goal. Merlin Baus scored the Tech goal on a free kick in the 54th minute.
With the draw, the Hokies remained undefeated on the road this year with a 3-0-1 record. They have picked up results in two away games versus ranked teams in then No. 10 Xavier and No. 19 Louisville. The Hokies are playing just their second home game in their last six matches and third of the season.
Merlin Baus is sitting near the top of the NCAA leaderboards in most offensive categories. The sophomore scored one goal and had an assist last week in two games. His performances have him 12th in the country in points per game at 2.0 and 6th in assists per game at 0.8. He is also 47th in goals per game (0.6).
The ACC has four teams in the top 10 of the NSCAA Top 25 Poll and seven in the top 25. Every team in the ACC currently has a winning overall record on the season.
Opponent History...
The two teams will be meeting for just the second time on Tuesday night. The Hokies and Blue Hens last faced each other in 2003 at the Radford Tournament and Delaware won the game 2-0. The game took place on Aug. 29, 2003 on a neutral field in Radford.
About Delaware...
Delaware is coming off a 1-0 defeat at home to Columbia University. Delaware was the CAA preseason favorite coming into the season and started off 3-1-1 but the Blue Hens have dropped their last two games to Columbia and a 3-0 loss at Iona.
Junior Guillermo Delgado is the leading scorer for the Blue Hens as he has four goals and an assist on the season. He was also named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
Delgado is a two-time All-America honoree led the conference with 12 goals, six game-winning goals and 26 points in 2014 and was selected as the CAA Player of the Year. The team returned seven starters from a squad that tied for the CAA regular season title in 2014.
Carlos Perales is the only other Delaware player with more than one goal as he has netted two. Blai Palmi has started six of the seven games in goal with a .703 save percentage and a 1.73 goals against average.
