BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team remained undefeated on the road in 2015 as they beat Virginia Military Institute on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1.

The Hokies got goals from senior Daniel Lauretano and sophomore Som Essome as they bounced back from an early deficit to take control of the game. Tech moved to 3-2 (0-1) on the season while VMI fell to 0-5.

The Hokies got solid defensive play from Alessandro Mion, Collin Verfurth and Jonathan Cruickshank among others as they clamped down in the second half and didn’t allow the Keydets to get off a single shot. Tech outshot VMI 17-0 during the 45-minute frame and 9-0 in shots on goal.

VMI got on the board first just six minutes into the contest as Travis Borkey scored off a volley against the run of play.

The Hokies, who dominated possession and chances, took just over three minutes to respond. Lauretano got a pass from Ricardo John and took a shot from the 18-yard box and beat the goalkeeper low to his right to even it up at 1-1. The Hokies took 11 total shots in the first half including a 6-2 edge on goal but went into the break tied.

Tech continued to pressure the Keydets’ defense as Alex Guerra was forced to make 12 saves on the day. Lauretano came painstakingly close to putting the Hokies ahead with his second goal but his effort in the 64th minute hit the left post and bounced out.

Essome finally did push the Hokies out in front in the 77th minute as he was played in to the right side of the box. He touched the ball around the keeper and used his right foot to hit the ball back across the face of the goal, off the post and in for the game-winner.

Tech, who is in the midst of playing four of five games on the road, won their third game of the season away from Thompson Field. The team has also knocked off then No.10 Xavier as well as Cincinnati.

The Hokies will get back to ACC play on Friday night at 7 p.m. as they travel to No. 19 Louisville to take on the Cardinals.
