BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team opened the season with a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to UNC-Greensboro on Friday night, 1-0.
The Hokies dominated possession and created chances for long stretches of the game but were unable to finish the opportunities they created. UNCG was the team finally able to capitalize on their best chance of the game in the 105th minute as Leeroy Maguraushe finished off a pass from Jacques Francois.
Sophomore Ricardo John was played in behind the defense on three different occasions in the first half thanks to turnovers from the Spartans’ midfield and back line. Two of his shots forced athletic saves by Logan Rohde. His first shot in the 6th minute came off a long breakaway as he eluded Rohde to his left but his high shot careened off the crossbar and back into play.
In the 75th minute, senior Daniel Lauretano hit a side volley to the back post from the top of the 18-yard box but Rhodes was able to knick the ball out for a corner.
John led the way for the Hokies with five total shots and three of them coming on goal. Dylan Huber was also able to get off three shots but couldn’t hit the target. Lauretano put all three on frame but they were ultimately saved.
The overtime periods saw both teams attempt to open the field without much success. The Hokies held possession but were only able to get off two shots in overtime to the Spartans three.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard sat dormant for long periods of the game and made four saves on five shots on goal.
Maguraushe had a team-high three shots for UNCG with two on goal. Jacques Francois was the only other Spartan to post more than a single shot with two.
Tech outshot the Spartans 17-10 on the evening and held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Hokies also racked up 13 corner kicks to just six for UNCG.
The Hokies will be back in action as they head to Ohio next week to take on the Cincinatti Bearcats on Thursday.
