BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech sophomore Som Essome garnered national recognition for his play this week being named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week as announced by College Soccer News on Monday morning.

Essome helped lead the Hokies to a 2-0 victory over Wake Forest last Friday evening. Previously, the Hokies had never beaten Wake Forest since joining the ACC and it was the Hokies’ first win over the Demon Deacons since 1997.

The sophomore from Essen, Germany slipped a ball through to teammate Ricardo John who put the Hokies up 1-0. A spectacular individual play from Essome led to the Hokies’ second goal when he powered through a pair of defenders and passed the ball across the face of the goal to a sprinting Niels Kirch to put Tech up 2-0.

Essome and the Hokies are back in action tomorrow night when the team plays host to George Washington. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
