BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team makes the trip to Charlottesville tomorrow evening to take on No. 15 Virginia to open up the squad’s 2014 ACC slate to kick off the Commonwealth Clash, the new point rivalry series between Virginia Tech and Virginia.
The Hokies come into the match with a 2-2 record, most recently defeating Longwood 4-1 at home. In that game, four different players scored goals for Tech. Junior Brad Vorv leads the Hokies in points so far this season on the strength of one goal and three assists. Sophomores Niels Kirch and Som Essome are right behind him with three points apiece on the strength of one goal and one assist each. Tech has had balanced scoring this season scoring six total goals by six different players.
Freshman goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard and senior goalkeeper Ben Lockler have both seen time in goal this season and combine for 16 saves, a save percentage of .696 and a 1.72 goals against average.
The Cavaliers come into the game ranked No. 15 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll and as high as No. 4 in various other national polls. Virginia has scored three goals this season. Senior Ryan Zinkhan leads the team with three points (one goal, one assist) while senior Kyle McCord and sophomore Sam Hayward each have two points apiece (one goal).
Goalkeepers Jeff Caldwell and Calle Brown have both played this season. The two combine for 12 saves, a .857 save percentage and a 0.63 goals against average.
