RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team begins a three-game road stretch starting with NC State on Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
The Hokies and NC State have met a total of 20 times in the two schools’ histories with the Wolfpack leading the all-time series 13-6-1. Last year, the squads met twice, once in the regular season and once in the ACC tournament. In the regular season, NC State crept away with a 1-0 win. Later on in the ACC tournament, the Hokies earned a 3-2 victory. David Clemens scored two goals in that match.
Currently Tech sits eighth in the ACC standings with eight points while NC State is three spots behind in 11th with six points. Only eight teams qualify for the ACC tournament this year.
Tech most recently defeated VMI 2-0 on Tuesday night. A goal and an assist from junior André Thomas would propel the Hokies to victory.
Tech got off to a quick start against VMI in the eighth minute when Thomas sent a pass to sophomore Kai Marshall. Marshall beat his defender and struck a shot past the outstretched VMI keeper. Thomas added his tally in the second half after senior David Clemens hit a shot that was blocked by a VMI defender. Thomas picked up the loose ball and hit it home to make the score 2-0.
Senior Robert Alberti paces the way for Tech with 10 points on the strength of four goals and two assists. André Thomas is not far behind with six points (two goals, two assists). Marshall and fellow sophomore Daniel Lauretano have also scored twice this season.
The Wolfpack comes into the match on the heels of a 2-0 victory over Liberty. Senior Nick Surkamp leads NC State with 11 points on the strength of five goals and one assist while senior Alex Martinez is not far behind with nine points (two goals, five assists).
Senior goalkeeper Fabian Otte has played most of the minutes in goal for NC State. Otte leads the team with 44 saves, a 1.32 goals against average and a .721 save percentage.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. Live stats and live video will be available for the match.
