BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team plays host to No. 17 Syracuse in the team’s ACC and home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The Hokies come into the game 1-1-0 after a pair of matches at the JMU Tournament. In Harrisonburg, Va. Tech defeated Binghamton 1-0 before falling to Fordham 1-2.
Against Binghamton, the Hokies outshot the Bearcats 17-6. The lone Tech goal came from redshirt-freshman Alessandro Mion in the 8th minute. Junior André Thomas dribbled down the left sideline and drove in a low cross to the foot of Mion who tucked it away behind the outstretched Bearcat goalkeeper.
In the match against Fordham, Tech got off to a slow start allowing two goals in the first half. After the break, the Hokies came out on fire putting an intense amount of pressure on the Rams’ defense and peppering the goal with 11 shots while Fordham only managed one. Unfortunately, the Hokies only made good on one of those opportunities when sophomore Daniel Lauretano headed in a cross from senior Robert Alberti.
No. 17 Syracuse (2-0-0) has only allowed one shot on goal this season, while scoring six in just two games. Freshman Emil Ekblom leads the way for the Orange with two goals, while four other players have scored for Syracuse. Four players have also tallied assists for the Orange.
Friday’s match also serves as Gear Up Night. Throughout the match, free Virginia Tech Nike apparel will be handed out to fans.
