BLACKSBURG, Va. – Head coach Mike Brizendine and the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team will take on Liberty in their first exhibition of the year on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
“We’re very excited to get the opportunity to play some outside competition tomorrow,” said Brizendine. “Even though we’ve only been in camp for a couple of days, we’re excited to see what we can do against a very good Liberty side.”
The Hokies are coming off of a 7-10-3 season that saw Tech earn the most wins in a single season since the 2007 edition of the Hokies amassed an impressive 14-4-5 record. In that same year, the Hokies made an incredible run in the NCAA Tournament before losing in the semifinal round of the College Cup.
The Hokies are led this year by senior captains David Clemens and Kyle Renfro. Clemens finished the year atop the statistical leaderboard after a standout season that saw him produce 10 goals and two assists. Renfro has been a mainstay in goal since his freshman season. Last year, the Forest, Va. native finished tops in the ACC with 98 saves.
While many familiar faces will take to the field for the Hokies, there are also several newcomers that will get the opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive collegiate match.
“We’ve got thirty guys this year that we’d like to get some time on the field tomorrow. This is a great opportunity for them to show me what they can do against a quality opponent before we enter the regular season,” Brizendine added.
The Flames come into the match against the Hokies on the heels of a 2012 season that saw them finish with an 8-7-3 mark, good enough for a fourth place finish in the Big South Conference.
Liberty is led by redshirt-senior Kyle Breitmeyer. The Flames’ forward scored seven goals and tallied one assist in 2012 en route to earning a second team All-Big South Conference nod.
Saturday’s exhibition will also serve as International Day. An ice-cream social will take place after the game free of charge for all international students.
