Marshall, Lauretano claim national championship in NPSL

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore forwards for the men’s soccer team, Kai Marshall and Daniel Lauretano, capped off a successful summer run with RVA FC in the National Premier Soccer League with a win in the championship against the Sonoma County Sol.

The NPSL is a nationwide league consisting of athletes holding an amateur playing status and serves as a starting point for players who eventually want to play professionally.

Both Marshall and Lauretano contributed valuable minutes in the team’s race to a title, helping RVA FC to a 6-2 mark in regular season play.

In the team’s first season in the NPSL, RVA FC finished the regular season undefeated and atop the standings in the Mid Atlantic Conference en route to their impressive playoff run that included three shutouts and 12 goals in four matches.

Last season for the Hokies, the then freshmen were each able to contribute two goals and one assist.

Marshall, Lauretano and the 2013 edition of the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team opens up exhibition play on Aug. 17 at Thompson Field against Liberty. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
