KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s soccer teams have each earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 academic year. Tech was one of 155 institutions from across the nation that had both their men’s and women’s programs honored.
Teams that maintained a grade point average 3.0 or higher during the academic year were honored with the award. Chugger Adair’s women’s team posted a team GPA of 3.16, while Mike Brizendine’s men’s squad made the cut with a team GPA of 3.01. A total of 789 soccer teams (218 men, 571 women) were recognized by the NSCAA.
The Hokie men were one of just three Atlantic Coast Conference teams to win the award, joining Duke and NC State. Six other ACC women’s programs were honored as well, including Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami, NC State and Virginia.
It marks the second consecutive year that the Tech men have earned the honor and third time overall in program history, as the Hokies first won the award in 2003.
