BLACKSBURG, Va. – Hokie freshmen Mikey Minutillo and Adama Wakai rank in the first College Players to Watch: Top 100 Men list, released today by TopDrawerSoccer.com. In the list Minutillo places 64th, while Wakai follows at 74th. With a young 2010 Tech squad counting on significant contributions from it’s freshmen, having two of the top 100 in the nation certainly won’t hurt this squad moving forward.
Minutillo has one goal on the season, which began a scoring frenzy that ended in a 7-2 trouncing of Howard University on Sept. 14. He has taken six shots this season, three on goal, to earn a .500 shots-on-goal percentage. Also, he has played in five games so far this season, making two starts. Minutillo, a San Jose, Calif. native, played for Bellarmine College Preparatory and the US Soccer Academy, combining for 19 goals and 20 assists in his first two seasons at Bellarmine, before joining the US Soccer Academy.
Wakai also scored the first goal of his Tech career during the Howard game, putting away the seventh and final score of the game off a shot inside the 18-yard box. The Charlotte, N.C., native has taken nine shots this season, four on goal, to earn a .444 shot-on-goal percentage. He has played in all six games this season, making one start. Wakai was named to the all-conference teams in his junior and senior campaigns at Hopewell High School and also received the offensive MVP award both those years. As a freshman with the US Soccer Academy U-18 North Meck Team, he was selected to the ODP National Select Team, the Super Y National Select Team, National and the Regional II Pools.
Minutillo, Wakai, and the rest of the Hokies play at N.C. State Saturday before returning home to face American University on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
