BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team named sophomore David Fiorello and senior Clarke Bentley team captains for the 2010 season. Head Coach Mike Brizendine knows that with such a young squad, good leadership is important in establishing team unity.
“I’m excited about our leadership for the 2010 season,” said Brizendine. “These two young men are committed to the goals and standards that our coaching staff expects from the team.”
Fiorello, a sophomore from Elverson, Pa., made a name for himself right away during his freshman campaign in 2009. He played in 18 games, registered 17 starts, and took eight shots, recording one assist. For his play, Fiorello was honored by the coaches as the 2009 Rookie of the Year. That, plus a strong off-season helped him earn the respect of his teammates and coaches.
“David showed our staff during the spring that he could lead this team. His maturity and steady resolve are obvious in everything that he does.”
Bentley is Tech’s leading returning scorer, netting three goals during his 2009 campaign. The senior out of Marietta, Ga., appeared in all 19 games, earning 14 starts. He is the current leading career scorer on the team, after putting away five goals during his three years at Tech. From what the coaches have seen leading up to this season, Bentley is more prepared than ever.
“I am very impressed with the way Clarke has taken a leadership role on this team. I have not seen him this focused and determined during his tenure with us. There is no doubt Clarke wants this team to be successful, both on and off the field.”
Fans can watch Fiorello, Bentley, and the rest of the Hokies take on Old Dominion in their final scrimmage of the preseason Saturday Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
