Hokies finish eighth at Stitch Intercollegiate

Final Results
The Virginia Tech men’s golf posted a three round total of 1-over 861 and finished in eighth place at the Stitch Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 7,003-yard MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.
Tech shot a 299 in Friday’s first round and improved to a 3-under 285 in Saturday’s second round. Tech turned in a 7-under 281 in the final round on Sunday. The tournament began the final round at 7:30 a.m., in order to avoid anticipated inclement weather on Sunday.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies at 8-under 208. He tied for eighth place, five strokes behind medalist Amarin (Ray) Kraivixien of Campbell. Lawrence shot a 3-under 69 in Sunday’s round and was under par in all three rounds.
Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 23rd at 216 and Joey Jordan, a junior from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 32nd at 147. Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, tied for 51st at 225 and Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 55th at 226.
Three Hokies posted eagles on Sunday. Burgess and Hildebrand birdied the par 5, 502-yard 17th and Pickering eagled the par 5, 575-yard 10th. Three Hokies broke par on Sunday, led by Hildebrand’s 5-under 67, his career-low collegiate round.
Duke won the individual title, with a total of 36-under 828, six strokes ahead of Wake Forest. NC State was third at 844 and UAB, Campbell and East Carolina tied for fourth at 847. College of Charleston was seventh at 864, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Maryland was ninth at 873, Appalachian State was 10th at 889, Richmond was 11th at 902 and Ohio was 12th at 911.
The Hokies return to action on Friday, as they begin play at the 2018 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. The three-day event will be played at the Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina.
