Hokies fifth entering final round at Furman

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team has a two round total of 4-over 580 and is in fifth place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Saturday. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.

Tech posted a 1-over 289 on Friday and followed that with a 291 in the second round on Saturday. Play was suspended at 6:40 p.m. on Saturday night due to lightning, with three teams still on the course, but all of the top 16 teams, including the Hokies, have completed their second round.

Ian Hildebrand leads the Hokie starters. The senior from Purcellville, Virginia, has a two round total of 1-under 143 and is tied for 15th place, eight strokes behind leader Phillip Knowles of North Florida.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia is tied for 21st at even-par 144 and Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia is in 27th place at 145. Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, is tied for 44th at 148 and Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina is tied for 88th at 154.

Three Hokies are playing this event as individuals. Joey Jordan, a junior from Richmond making his collegiate debut, is tied for 10th at 142. He carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday. Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 107th at 158 and Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts is tied for 111th at 160. Lawrence shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday and Burgess eagled the par 5, 483-yard sixth hole.

North Florida continues to lead at 13-under 563, 10 strokes ahead of West Virginia and 14 strokes ahead of Division II power USC Aiken. Yale is fourth at 578, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Gardner-Webb is sixth at 581, host Furman is seventh at 582, James Madison is eighth at 583, Francis Marion is ninth at 584 and Wichita State is 10th at 591. Akron, Marshall, USC Upstate, Winthrop, Dartmouth and Harvard round out the top 16 teams, all who have completed their second round.

The second round will be completed on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and the final round will follow with a shotgun start on at 9:30 a.m. Live scoring is available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
