Hokies finish 15th in Puerto Rico

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 911 and finished in 15^th place at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. The three-day event was played at the par 71, 6,716-yard Ocean Course at the Westin Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Tech shot a 299 in Sunday’s first round and followed that with a 309 in the second round on Monday. Tech posted a 303 in Tuesday’s final round.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies with a 6-over 219. He tied for 26^th place individually, 13 strokes behind medalist Lee Hodges of Alabama. Lawrence shot a 1-over 72 in the final round, Tech’s best round of the day. Lawrence eagled the par-5, 490-yard fifth hole.

Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 49^th place at 225 and Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, finished in 68^th place at 232. Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, finished in 74^th place at 237 and Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts, finished in 75^th place at 247

Clemson fired a final round 284 and won the team title. The Tigers posted a 2-over 854 and defeated Oklahoma by one stroke and host Purdue by three strokes. Georgia Tech was fourth at 859, Alabama was fifth at 866, Georgia was sixth at 867 and NC State finished seventh at 870. Middle Tennessee State was eighth at 879, East Carolina was ninth at 880 and Ohio State was 10^th at 882. Marquette was 11^th at 883, Maryland and UNC Greensboro tied for 12^th at 889 and Kentucky was 14^th at 894, 17 strokes ahead of the Hokies.

The Hokies return to action on March 10-11, as they travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to compete in the General Hackler Championship. The two-day event will be played at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
