Hokies finish sixth at Tar Heel Intercollegiate

Final Results
The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 16-under 848 and finished in sixth place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 7,349-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
Tech shot a final round 1-under 287 on Sunday. The Hokies had carded a 271 in Saturday’s first round and had followed that with a 290 in the second round.
Mark Lawrence Jr. shot a 6-under 210 and finished in a tie for 12th place. He was 13 strokes behind medalist Ben Griffin of North Carolina. In Sunday’s final round, Lawrence tied his collegiate low of 66. He had seven birdies and eagled the par 5 sixth hole on Sunday. The 66 is a season-best for a Hokie this fall.
Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, shot a 3-under 213 and tied for 23rd place, Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, Sarit Suwannarut, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand and Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, shot 215 and tied for 33rd.
Two Hokies played as individuals. Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, shot 215 and tied for 33rd place and Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, shot 228 and finished in 71st place.
Host North Carolina won the team title with a 49-under 815, 23 strokes ahead of runner-up Jacksonville, UNC Wilmington was third at 843, Maryland was fourth at 844 and Coastal Carolina was fifth at 847, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Boston College was seventh at 849, Campbell was eighth at 850, UNC Greensboro was ninth at 854, Gardner-Webb was 10th at 858, VCU was 11th at 867 and Furman was 12th at 876.
The Hokies return to action this weekend, as they travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club. The three-day event will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Blackthorn Club Golf Course at Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.
