Hokies finish second at Janney Invitational

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 14-under 850 and finished in second place at the Janney Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The two-day event, hosted by VCU, was played at the par 72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek at the Country Club of Virginia.

Tech shot a 284 in Monday’s first round and followed that with a 286 in the afternoon round. On Tuesday, Tech, the defending champion at the tournament, carded an 8-under 280 to finish at 850. Tech’s final round 280 was the best round of the day and second-best round of the tournament.

Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, making just his second collegiate start, finished in a tie for second place at 9-under 207. He tied Thadd Obecny of Coastal Carolina, one stroke behind medalist Oliver Whatley of Rutgers. Burgess posted sub-par rounds of 67-70-70 on route to the 207.

Sarit Suwannarut, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 12th at 212 and Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 19th at 214. Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 60th at 227 and Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, tied for 69th at 231. Fiest had the best round of the day for the Hokies, at 5-under 67, which also ties the low round of the early season for Tech. All four counting scores for the Hokies on Tuesday were par-or-better. Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts, played the tournament as an individual and finished 72nd overall.

West Virginia won the event with a 22-under 850, eight strokes ahead of the Hokies. Maryland was third at 851, Coastal Carolina was fourth at 855, Charlotte was fifth at 857 and Radford was sixth at 858. Rutgers was seventh at 860, host VCU was eighth at 865, James Madison was ninth at 867, George Washington was 10th at 872, ODU was 11th at 874 and Richmond was 12th at 884.

The Hokies return to the course on Oct. 7-8, as they compete in the Tar Heel Invitational. The two-day tournament, hosted by the University of North Carolina, will be played at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
