Virginia Tech golfer Mark Lawrence Jr. defeated Dawson Armstrong, 3 & 2, on Friday at the 2017 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship and has advanced to the semifinal round on Saturday. The weeklong event is being played at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, dropped the first hole in his quarterfinal match and was All Square at the turn. On the back nine, Lawrence won No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 to take a 3 Up lead. Armstrong won the 14th to cut his deficit to two holes, but Lawrence won the par-3 16th and claimed the match, 3 & 2.
Lawrence advances to the semifinal round on Saturday morning. He will face the 62nd seed Doc Redman of Raleigh, North Carolina and Clemson. FOX will televise portions of the semifinal round, beginning at noon on Saturday.
