Mark Lawrence Jr. set for US Amateur

Virginia Tech golfer Mark Lawrence Jr., will compete in the 2017 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship. The week-long event begins Monday, Aug. 14 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California.

Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, looks to continue his strong play from the end of the regular season and over the summer months. He won the 2017 Virginia State Amateur in July and finished fourth at the Virginia State Open last month. This will be his first appearance in the US Amateur.

Lawrence will play his first round on Monday at Bel-Air Country Club. He tees off of the 10th hole at 8:03 a.m. Pacific Time, grouped with Kyle Slattery of Southern Illinois Edwardsville and Arjuna Anday, a recent Columbia graduate.

The field of 312 golfers will begin play Monday morning for two rounds of stroke play, playing both Riviera and Bel-Air. Following Tuesday’s second round, the top 64 golfers will enter match play, to be contested soley at Riviera. All rounds of match play will be broadcast by either Fox, FS1 or usga.org, culminating in a 36-hole final match, to be played on Sunday, Aug. 20.
