Mark Lawrence Jr. qualifies for US Amateur

Rising junior continues outstanding summer play

Virginia Tech golfer Mark Lawrence, Jr. posted back-to-back rounds of 65-65 for a total of 10-under 130 on Monday to win medalist honors and qualified for the 2017 US Amateur. The qualifier was held on Tuesday at the par 70, 6,562-yard James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia.

Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, claimed one of three spots available at the qualifier. He finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Scott Shingler and four strokes ahead of William Register, who grabbed the other two spots. Lawrence recorded one eagle, 11 birdies and just three bogeys in the 36-hole qualifier. Earlier this month, Lawrence won the 104^th Virginia State Golf Association’s State Amateur Championship. This will be Lawrence’s first appearance in the US Amateur.

The US Amateur Championship will be played August 14-20 at the famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The format is 36 holes of stroke play, with the top 64 players advancing to match play. On-site qualifying rounds will be played at Riviera and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California.
