Mark Lawrence Jr. qualifies for US Amateur

Virginia Tech golfer Mark Lawrence, Jr. posted back-to-back rounds of 65-65 for a total of 10-under 130 on Monday to win medalist honors and qualified for the 2017 US Amateur. The qualifier was held on Tuesday at the par 70, 6,562-yard James River Country Club in Newport News, Virginia.

Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, claimed one of three spots available at the qualifier. He finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Scott Shingler and four strokes ahead of William Register, who grabbed the other two spots. Lawrence recorded one eagle, 11 birdies and just three bogeys in the 36-hole qualifier. Earlier this month, Lawrence won the 104th Virginia State Golf Association’s State Amateur Championship. This will be Lawrence’s first appearance in the US Amateur.

The US Amateur Championship will be played August 14-20 at the famed Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The format is 36 holes of stroke play, with the top 64 players advancing to match play. On-site qualifying rounds will be played at Riviera and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California.
