Lawrence, Suwannarut named to 2017 All-State Men's Golf teams

State coaches honor Hokie golfers

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech golfers Mark Lawrence Jr., and Sarit Suwannarut have been named to the 2017 Virginia State Golf Coaches Association’s All-State teams.

Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, is a first team selection and Suwannarut, a rising sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, is named to the second team. This is the first selection for each of the Hokie golfers. Earlier this summer, both golfers earned similar All-State honors from the state’s sports information directors.

Lawrence led the Hokies in scoring average and “Crunch Time” average this season, his first with the team since transferring from Auburn. He was named to the All-East Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America and finished 12^th individually in the West Lafayette NCAA Regional.

Suwannarut was second on the team in scoring average. He tied the school record for lowest round, with a 64 in his first collegiate round, in the Joe Feagans Marshall Invitational. He finished third in each of his first two collegiate starts and added three more top 20 finishes in his freshman season. He joined Lawrence as an individual competitor in the West Lafayette NCAA Regional.

Virginia head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent has been named Coach of the Year by the VSGCA. The All-State first team consists of Lawrence, Derek Bard (Virginia), Ryan Cole (James Madison), Jimmy Stanger (Virginia), and Thomas Walsh (Virginia).

The All-State second team consists of Suwannarut, Mickey DeMorat (Liberty), Keegan Hoff (Richmond), Isaiah Logue (Liberty), and Danny Walker (Virginia).
