Three Hokies advance to match play at State Amateur

Lawrence wins playoff to advance, joins Hildebrand and Yates

Three Virginia Tech golfers advanced to match play at the 104^th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship on Wednesday afternoon. The tournament is being played at the 7,061-yard, par 72 Club at Creighton Farms in Aldie, Virginia.

Logan Yates, a rising junior from Ruckersville, Virginia and Ian Hildebrand, a rising senior from Purcellville, Virginia, each posted 3-over 147 and tied for 16^th place in the two-day stroke portion of the tournament. Mark Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 32^nd place at 150. The top 32 players from the field of 132 players advanced to match play.

Lawrence was part of a five-for-one playoff. He won the playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole. Lawrence was a finalist in 2015 and a semifinalist in last season’s event, played at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.

Lawrence will play stroke play medalist Michael Brennan. They will tee off at 8 a.m., in the first pairing of the Round of 32. Next off will be Hildebrand, the 16^th seed, against Lee Fisher, the 17^th seed, at 8:08 a.m., in the second group of the day. The winners of these first two matches will play each other beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Yates, the 19^th seed, will play the 14^th seed Sebastian Bonte at 9:44 a.m. The winner of that match will play at 1:30 p.m., against the winner of third seed Drew Brockwell vs. 30^th seed Vincent Nadeau.

The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played on Friday and the 36-hole finals will be played on Saturday morning.
