Two Hokies make All-State men's golf team

Lawrence first team, Suwannarut second team VaSID selections

BLACKSBURG, Va. – A pair of Virginia Tech men’s golfers have been named to the 2017 VaSID All-State University Division Men’s Golf team, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors organization.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, was named to the first team and Sarit Suwannarut, a rising sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, was named to the second team. This is the first time either of the golfers have been named to the team.

Lawrence led the Hokies in scoring average and “Crunch Time” average this season, his first with the team since transferring from Auburn. He was named to the All-East Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America and finished 12^th individually in the West Lafayette NCAA Regional.

Suwannarut was second on the team in scoring average. He tied the school record for lowest round, with a 64 in his first collegiate round, in the Joe Feagans Marshall Invitational. He finished third in each of his first two collegiate starts and added three more top 20 finishes in his freshman season. He joined Lawrence as an individual competitor in the West Lafayette NCAA Regional.

Virginia’s Jimmy Stanger was named the Player of the Year and the Cavaliers’ Bowen Sargent was named VaSID Coach of the Year. Kieran Vincent of Liberty was named VaSID Rookie of the Year.

Lawrence and Stanger were joined on the VaSID first time by last year’s VaSID Player of the Year, Ryan Cole, Derek Bard of Virginia and Liberty’s Isaiah Logue. Joining Suwannarut on the second team were Vincent, Myles Creighton of Radford, Eric Edwards of George Mason and Mickey DeMorat of Liberty.
