Solid first day for Hokies at NCAA West Lafayette Regional

Lawrence 1-under-par, Suwannarut even par

Virginia Tech men’s golfers Mark Lawrence and Sarit Suwannarut posted solid rounds to open play at the 2017 NCAA Men’s Golf West Lafayette Regional on Monday. The three-day event is being played at the par-72, 7,411-yard Kampen Course at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Both players are competing as individuals in the event. Lawrence is the second seed of the 10 individuals at the site and Suwannarut is the seventh seed.

Lawrence, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for seventh place among the 75 in West Lafayette. He is four strokes behind the leader, John Oda of UNLV. Lawrence eagled the 534-yard, par-5 fourth hole and made the turn at 3-under.

Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 14^th place overall. He birdied the first hole and made the turn at 2-under.

The top five teams and the top individual not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship finals. The finals will be played May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. UNLV has the team lead after the first round.
