Hokies finish ninth at ACC Championship

CLINTON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a 29-over 893 and finished in ninth place at the 2017 ACC Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday evening. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 6,951-yard Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, South Carolina.

Tech shot a 294 in Friday’s first round. In Saturday morning’s second round, the Hokies shot a 297 and closed with a 302 in Saturday’s afternoon session. The tournament, originally scheduled for three days, was condensed to two days with the threat of inclement weather on Sunday. The teams played 36 holes on Saturday.

Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, led the Hokies with a 4-over 220 and tied for 22nd place. He finished nine strokes behind co-medalists Bryson Nimmer of Clemson, Jimmy Stanger of Virginia, Ben Griffin of North Carolina and Paul McBride of Wake Forest. Stanger won the playoff to earn the NCAA automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia shot 222 and tied for 27th place and Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 34th place at 225. Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand tied for 43rd place at 229 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 54th place at 235.

Duke claimed the team title with a 14-under 850, 12 strokes better than runner-up Clemson. Wake Forest was third at 867, Florida State was fourth at 868 and NC State was fifth at 873. Virginia finished sixth at 874 and Georgia Tech and North Carolina tied for seventh at 883, 10 strokes ahead of the Hokies. Notre Dame was 10th at 900, Louisville was 11th at 905 and Boston College was 12th at 921.

Tech will now await the NCAA Selection show on May 4 to see if any of the Hokies are selected as individual competitors in the NCAA Championship.
