Hokies eighth after first round at ACC Championship

CLINTON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a 6-over 294 and is in eighth place after the first round of the 2017 ACC Men’s Golf Championship on Friday. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 6,951-yard Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, South Carolina.
Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, led the Hokies in day one with a 3-under 69 and is tied for seventh place. He trails leader Bryson Nimmer of Clemson by three strokes.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia shot even-par 72 and is tied for 19th place and Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand is tied for 35th at 77. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 49th place at 78 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 53rd at 79.
Duke has the first round lead, shooting 11-under 277, one stroke ahead of Florida State and two strokes ahead of Clemson. Georgia Tech is fourth at 288, NC State is fifth at 291, Wake Forest is sixth at 292 and Notre Dame is seventh at 293, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. North Carolina is ninth at 295, Boston College and Virginia are tied for 10th at 296 and Louisville is 12th at 301.
The second round will be played on Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m., unless forecasted inclement weather forces tournament officials to make schedule changes. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
