Hokies wrap-up regular season at Wolfpack Spring Open

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will wrap-up the 2016-17 regular season this week at the Wolfpack Spring Open. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the par 71, 7,046-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

This is the Hokies’ first appearance at the Wolfpack Spring Open. Tech is one of three Atlantic Coast Conference schools in the 12-team event. Three teams are ranked in the top 50 of the current Golfstat.com rankings, led by No. 15 Clemson.

Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the first spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence leads the Hokies in scoring average at 71.09. He finished fifth at Marshall to open the fall season. He has two top five finishes and one top 10 in the team’s last three events, highlighted by a fourth place finish at Furman.

Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, will play second for the Hokies. The newcomer had a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events and tied for 13th at UNC and 15th in Tennessee. He is second on the team in stroke average.

Playing the three spot for Tech is Joey Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia, secured his first collegiate win at VCU in September. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer. He tied for 15th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in the fall and finished 23rd at Furman this spring.

Playing fourth is Logan Yates. A sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, Yates is fourth on the team in scoring and second in crunch time scoring. He had two top-10 finishes in the first two events of the season.

Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina and Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina will compete in the tournament. One will occupy the fifth position and the other will compete as an individual. The order will be determined following Thursday’s practice round.

The teams will play a practice round on Thursday and begin competition on Friday, playing 36 holes, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The final round will be played on Saturday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. There will be live scoring available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
