Hokies tie for 10th at Augusta

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three round total of 1-over 865 and tied with UAB for 10th place at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event was played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia on Saturday and Sunday.

Tech shot a 7-under 281 in Saturday’s morning round and followed that with a 4-over 292 in the afternoon round. The Hokies shot a 292 in Sunday’s final round.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies. He shot a 5-under 211 and tied for 10th place individually. He shot a 5-under 67 in Saturday’s morning round, his low round of the season. He finished six strokes behind medalist Dylan Meyer of Illinois. This marks Lawrence’s third consecutive top 10 finish. He eagled the par 5, 549-yard 6th hole on Sunday.

Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 30th at 215 and Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 47th at 219. Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina tied for 57th at 222 and Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia tied for 68th at 225.

UCF claimed the team title at 28-under 836, four strokes ahead of runner-up Wake Forest and seven strokes ahead of New Mexico. Illinois was fourth at 847, host Augusta was fifth at 849 and Oklahoma was sixth at 852. Houston was seventh at 854, Georgia was eighth at 856 and Georgia State was ninth at 857, eight strokes ahead of the Hokies and Blazers. Tennessee was 12th at 868, Mercer was 13th at 876, USC Aiken was 14th at 880 and Army was 15th at 883.

The Hokies will wrap up the regular season portion of the schedule this coming weekend, as they compete in the Wolfpack Spring Open, to be played at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday.
