Hokies head to Augusta
Tech to play in 3M Augusta Invitational to open April

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will compete in the 39th annual 3M Augusta Invitational on April 1-2. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
The event once again welcomes an outstanding field to Augusta. Four teams currently in the top 20 of the Golfstat.com rankings will compete, led by No. 10 Wake Forest. Tech and the Demon Deacons are the ACC representatives in the field. Among former individual winners of the tournament are Dustin Johnson (2007), Justin Leonard (1992) and Phil Mickleson (1989). Tech’s Scott Vincent was the runner-up in 2014.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, will lead off for the Hokies. Suwannarut had a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events and tied for 13th at UNC and 15th in Tennessee in the fall. He leads the Hokies in stroke average and finished 24th in Puerto Rico to open the spring season.
Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the second spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence is second in scoring average at 71.20. He finished fifth at Marshall to open the fall season and finished tied for 29th at Puerto Rico. He had his best collegiate showing earlier in March, when he placed fourth at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and followed that with a fifth place finish at Furman last week.
Playing the three spot for Tech is Joey Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia, secured his first collegiate win at VCU in September. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer. He tied for 15th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in the fall. He finished 28th at the Hackler and 23rd at Furman.
Tom Crow continues the line-up, moving up into the fourth spot. The freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia made his first appearance in the starting line-up at the Hackler and also started at Furman.
Blake Fiest returns to the line-up in the fifth spot. The sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina earned his first collegiate start to open the spring in Puerto Rico
The teams will play a practice round on Friday and begin competition the following day, playing 36 holes on Saturday and the 18-hole final round on Sunday. There will be live scoring available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
