Hokies tie for seventh at Furman

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three round total of 1-under 863 and tied with Gardner-Webb for seventh place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday. The three-day, 54-hole event was played at the par 72, 7,004-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.

Tech shot a 7-under 281 on Sunday, the second-best round of the day. The Hokies shot a 290 on Friday and followed that with a 292 on Saturday morning.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies. He carded a three-round total of 7-under 209 and tied for fifth individually. He finished four strokes behind medalist Carson Young of Clemson. Lawrence shot identical 4-under 68s on Saturday and Sunday. He had 12 birdies and just two bogeys and a double bogey in his final 36 holes at Furman.

Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, shot a 1-under 215 and tied for 23rd and Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 34th at 217. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 66th at 222 and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, was 118th at 235. The Hokies’ four counting scores on Sunday were par-or-better.

Three Hokies played the event as individuals. Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina tied for 66th at 222, Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 77th at 223 and Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia tied for 92nd at 226.

Clemson won the event with a tournament-record 29-under 835. The Tigers finished 14 strokes ahead of USC Aiken and 20 strokes ahead of Chattanooga and Georgia Southern. Wofford was fifth at 861 and Harvard was sixth at 862 one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Bulldogs. James Madison and Western Carolina tied for ninth at 866, Wichita State was 11th at 868 and Akron was 12th at 874. West Virginia, USC Upstate, Marshall, Francis Marion, host Furman, Temple, Samford and Presbyterian rounded out the 20-team field.

The Hokies return to action on Saturday and Sunday at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The 54-hole event will be played at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
