Hokies 10th after first round at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot an opening round 2-over 290 and is in 10th place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday afternoon. The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the par 72, 7,004-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.

Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, leads the Hokies. He shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 17th place. He trails leader Brett Barron of Georgia Southern by eight strokes, who shot a tournament record 63 on Friday. Crow recorded two eagles in his opening round.

Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, is tied for 27th at even-par 72 and sophomore Mark Lawrence Jr., is tied for 48th at 73. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 65th at 75 and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, is tied for 113th at 79.

Three Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia is tied for 48th at 73, Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, is tied for 90th at 76 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 110th at 78. In all, the Hokies registered four eagles on the afternoon, one on each of the four, par-5s on the course.

Georgia Southern leads the tournament with a 1-under 279, one stroke ahead of Clemson and two strokes ahead of Wofford. Western Carolina is fourth at 283, Dartmouth and Wichita State are tied for fifth at 285 and Harvard and Division II power USC Aiken are tied for seventh at 287. James Madison is at even-par 288, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Chattanooga is 11th at 291, Gardner-Webb is 12th at 293, USC Upstate is 13th at 294 and host Furman is 14th at 295. Presbyterian, Akron, West Virginia, Francis Marion, Marshall and Samford round out the 20-team field.

The second round will be played Saturday. The Hokies will tee off beginning at 9:30 a.m. from the 10th tee. Tech will again be grouped with West Virginia and Wofford. Live stats are available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
