Hokies make return trip to Furman

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team will compete in the Furman Intercollegiate on March 24-26. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the par 72, 7,004-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Hokies have made this event an annual stop on the schedule. As part of this trip, the team spends a day at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville. Every year, the Hokies look to brighten the days of children at the hospital. This rewarding event even attracts team members who may not be competing at Furman to make the trip to be a part of the experience at the hospital.

This year’s tournament boasts a field of 20, the largest regular season field for any of the Hokies’ tournaments. Tech is one of two ACC teams in the field, which is led by Clemson, which is ranked 17th in the updated Golfstat.com rankings.

Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, will lead off for the Hokies. The newcomer had a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events and tied for 13th at UNC and 15th in Tennessee. He leads the Hokies in stroke average and finished 24th in Puerto Rico to open the spring season.

Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the second spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence is second in scoring average at 71.47. He finished fifth at Marshall to open the fall season and finished tied for 29th at Puerto Rico. He had his best collegiate showing in the Hokies’ last tournament, when he placed fourth at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Playing third for Tech is Logan Yates. A sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, Yates is third on the team in scoring and leads in crunch time scoring. He had two top-10 finishes in the first two events of the season.

Playing the four spot for Tech is Joey Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia, secured his first collegiate win at VCU in September. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer. He tied for 15th at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in the fall. He finished 28th at the Hackler last week.

Tom Crow continues the line-up in the fifth spot. The freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia made his first appearance in the starting line-up last tournament at the Hackler.

Three Hokies will be competing in the tournament as individuals. Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia and Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina will compete unattached. This will be Johnson’s first appearance of the spring. He is currently fifth on the team in scoring average.

The teams will play a practice round on Thursday and begin competition on Friday, playing 18 holes each day. The Hokies will begin play Thursday afternoon, as they will be grouped with West Virginia and Wofford. The Hokies will tee off from the first tee beginning at 1:40 p.m. There will be live scoring available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
