Hokies fifth, Lawrence fourth at General Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – With the final round canceled due to inclement weather, the Virginia Tech men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina after it posted a two-round total of 10-over 586 on Saturday. The event was played at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Club.
Tech shot an opening round even-par 288 in the Saturday morning session and followed that with a 298 in the afternoon round. The weather forced the event to be shortened to 36 holes.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, led the Hokies individually. He finished in fourth place, at 3-under 141. He finished six strokes behind medalist Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest . Lawrence shot 3-under 69 in the morning and followed with an even-par 72 in the afternoon. He eagled the par-5, 640-yard 13th hole in the morning round.
Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, tied for 28th at 147. Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia tied for 45th place at 149. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 51st at 150. Suwannarut eagled the par 4, 440-yard second hole in the Saturday afternoon round.
Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia, played the event as an individual. He tied for 75th at 158.
Wake Forest won the tournament at 15-under 561, 10 strokes ahead of Kent State and 12 strokes ahead of defending national champion, LSU. South Carolina was fourth at 584, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. East Carolina was sixth at 587, North Florida and Kentucky tied for seventh at 588, ETSU and South Alabama tied for ninth at 596 and Iowa State was 11th at 597. Host Coastal Carolina finished 12th at 599, Virginia was 13th at 601, Charleston Southern was 14th at 602 and NC State was 15th at 603.
The Hokies return to action on March 24-26, as they compete in the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.
