Hokies fifth at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a two-round total of 10-over 586 and is in fifth place at the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The event is being played at the par-72, 7,233-yard Dunes Club.

Tech shot an opening round even-par 288 in the morning session and followed that with a 298 in the afternoon round.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, leads the Hokies individually. He is in fourth place entering the final round, at 3-under 141. He trails leader Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest by six strokes. Lawrence shot 3-under 69 in the morning and followed with an even-par 72 in the afternoon. He eagled the par-5, 640-yard 13th hole in the morning round.

Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 28th at 147. Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia are tied for 45th place at 149. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 51st at 150. Suwannarut eagled the par 4, 440-yard second hole in the afternoon round.

Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia, is playing the event as an individual. He is tied for 75th at 158.

Wake Forest leads the tournament at 15-under 561, 10 strokes ahead of Kent State and 12 strokes ahead of defending national champion, LSU. South Carolina is fourth at 584, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. East Carolina is sixth at 587, North Florida and Kentucky are tied for seventh at 588, ETSU and South Alabama are tied for ninth at at 596 and Iowa State is 11th at 597. Host Coastal Carolina is 12th at 599, Virginia is 13th at 601, Charleston Southern is 14th at 602 and NC State is 15th at 603.

The final round, weather permitting will be played Sunday morning. Inclement weather is expected and could affect the final round. A decision will not be made until Sunday morning. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
