RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 21-over 885 and finished in 12th place at the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day event was played at the par-72, 6,945 yard Rio Mar Beach and Spa Resort's River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hokies shot an 18-over 306 in Sunday’s first round, but followed that 20 strokes better on Monday, with the 286 in the second round. Tech was one of seven schools to break par in the second round. The Hokies shot a 5-over 293 in Tuesday’s final round.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, led the Hokies. He shot a 1-over 217 in the event. He tied for 24th place, nine strokes behind medalist Luke Schniederjans of Georgia Tech.
Mark Lawrence, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 29th at 219. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia tied for 48th at 224. Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville Virginia, tied for 53rd place at 226 and Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 70th at 232. Yates had the Hokies’ best round on Tuesday with a 2-under 70.
Clemson won the team title. The Tigers posted a three-round total of 19-under 845, 11 strokes better than Georgia and 14 strokes better than NC State and Georgia Tech. Ohio State was fifth at 865, Kentucky was sixth at 867, host Purdue was seventh at 869 and Middle Tennessee State was eighth at 870. Northwestern was ninth at 875, Ole Miss was 10th at 878 and North Carolina was 11th at 881, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Defending champion Alabama was 13th at 889, UNC Greensboro was 14th at 892 and Maryland was 15th at 900.
The Hokies return to action on March 11-12, as they compete in the General Hackler Championship. The two-day event will be played at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
