Hokies up to 12th in Puerto Rico
Sarit Suwannarut cards 67; tied for sixth individually

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a 2-under par 286 and is in 12th place following the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day event is being played at the par-72, 6,945 yard Rio Mar Beach and Spa Resort's River Course in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hokies shot an 18-over 306 in Sunday’s first round, but followed that 20 strokes better om Monday, with the 286 in the second round. Tech was one of seven schools to break par in the second round.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, leads the Hokies. He shot a 5-under 67 in the second round and has a two-round total of 3-under par 141. He is tied for sixth place and is five strokes behind individual leader Bryson Nimmer of Clemson. Suwannarut's 67 was tied for the best round of the day and the tournament.
Mark Lawrence, a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 23rd at 145 after shooting a 2-under 70 on Monday. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia is tied for 54th at 151. Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville Virginia, are tied for 69th place at 156.
Clemson leads the tournament entering Tuesday’s final round. The Tigers have a two-round total of 560, seven stroke ahead of first day leader Georgia and 11 strokes ahead of Kentucky. NC State is fourth at 575 and Georgia Tech and Middle Tennessee State are tied for fifth at 578. Host Purdue is seventh at 580, Ohio State is eighth at 581 and Northwestern is ninth at 582. North Carolina is 10th at 586 and Ole Miss is 11th at 590, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Defending champion Alabama and UNC Greensboro are tied for 13th at 593 and Maryland is 15th at 600.
The final round will be played on Tuesday. The Hokies will be grouped with North Carolina and Ole Miss in the final round. Live stats will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from BirdieFire.com.
