Connor Burgess signs with Hokies

VSGA Junior Boys Golfer of the Year to join team in Fall 2017

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s golf program has announced the signing of Connor Burgess to a national letter of intent to attend Virginia Tech and play golf for the Hokies in Fall 2016.

Burgess, from Lynchburg, Virginia, attends E.C. Glass High School, where he is an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. On Nov. 8, Burgess was named as the highly-prestigious Virginia State Golf Association Junior Boys Golfer of the Year.

A first team All-State selection, Burgess led E.C. Glass to the VHSL 4A State Golf Championship in October and finished third individually. He had an outstanding summer in 2016 and was the only player from Virginia to qualify for both the 2016 U.S. Junior and U.S. Amateur Championships, earning medalist honors in the amateur qualifying at Willow Oaks in Richmond. He shot 71-66 to win the prestigious Fox Puss Invitational and represented Virginia in both the Virginia/Carolinas Junior Matches and Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational. He also qualified for the Virginia State Amateur, eventually losing to future Virginia Tech teammate Mark Lawrence in match play. In 2014, he finished fifth in the U.S. Kids Teen World Championship and was a Junior World Cup qualifier, playing on the victorious U.S. squad.

“Connor brings to our program a proven record of success on the national level.” Virginia Tech head coach Jay Hardwick said. “This experience, combined with his academic achievements, should ensure him of a very bright future at Virginia Tech. More importantly, he’s a quality young man who will be another outstanding member of the Virginia Tech family when he arrives next fall.”
