JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three-round total of 3-under 861 and tied host East Tennessee State for fifth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the Par-72, 7,147 yards Blackthorn Club golf course in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
The Hokies had a 2-under 286 in Friday’s first round before posting a 3-over 291 in the second round on Saturday. On Sunday, the Hokies recorded a 4-under 284. The Hokies’ round of 284 was the third-best round of the day.
Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, and Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, led the Hokies with 4-under 212. The pair finished nine strokes behind medalist Charles Huntzinger of Penn State.
The top individual highlight of the tournament for the Hokies belongs to Tom Crow. The freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, playing the event as an individual, recorded a hole-in-one on the 188-yard, par 3 seventh hole. It is Crow’s first hole-in-one of his life.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, finished in 32nd place at 217 and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for 48th at 221. Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, finished 71st at 227.
Crow was one of two Hokies to play as individuals. Crow finished tied for 57th at 222 and Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 80th at 234.
Virginia claimed team honors, finishing with a three-round total of 39-under 829, 13 strokes ahead of Missouri. Kent State was third at 849 and UNC Wilmington finished fourth at 856, five strokes ahead of the Hokies and Bucs. Charlotte was seventh at 863, Penn State was eighth at 864, Louisville was ninth at 865 and Kansas State was 10th at 866. Coastal Carolina was 11th at 867, VCU was 12th at 872, Furman and Tennessee tied for 13th at 874 and Villanova was 15th at 900.
Tech returns to action in two weeks. They will compete in the UNCG Bridgestone Invitational on Oct. 30-31. The event will be played at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.
