JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted an opening round 2-under 286 and is in eighth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Friday afternoon. The three-day event is being played at the Par-72, 7,147 yards Blackthorn Club golf course in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, leads the Hokies. He shot a 2-under 70 on Friday and is tied for 14th place. He trails leader Thomas Eldridge of UNC Wilmington by five strokes.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 22nd place at 1-under 71 and Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is tied for 30th at even-par 72. Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 34th at 73 and Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, is tied for 47th at 74.
Two Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 73rd at 76 and Ian Hildebrand, a junior from Purcellville, Virginia, is 83rd with an 81.
Missouri has the team lead following the first 18 holes. The Tigers shot an 11-under 277, one stroke better than UNC Wilmington and three ahead of Virginia. Host East Tennessee State is fourth at 281 and Louisville and VCU are tied for fifth at 283. Penn State is seventh at 285, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and two strokes ahead of Kent State. Furman is 10th at 290, Kansas State is 11th at 291, Tennessee is 12th at 292, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina are tied for 13th at 295 and Villanova is 15th at 302.
The second round will be played Saturday morning. The Hokies will tee off beginning at 10:10 am and will be grouped with Penn State and Kent State. Live stats are available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
