CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia Tech posted a two-round total of 13-over 589 and is tied for 10th place at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Friday. The event is being played at at the par 72, 7,220-yard UNC Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Hokies shot a 296 in the morning round on Friday and improved to a 293 in the afternoon. The 589 total is tied with VCU.
Tech was forced to play the second round without Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia. He suffered from back spasms on his third hole in the second round. It is not known if he will be able to return for the final round on Sunday. He carded a 1-over 73 in the morning round.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, leads the Hokies, He carded a two-round total of 1-under 143 and is tied for 13th place overall. He trails co-leaders Alfredo Ruiz of Coastal Carolina and Jake McGlone of UNC Greensboro by five strokes.
Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, is tied for 37th at 147 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, is tied for 55th at 151. Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, is in 67th place at 154.
UNC Wilmington leads the event at 9-under 567, three strokes ahead of host UNC. UNC Greensboro and Maryland are tied for third at 573, Liberty is fifth at 574, North Florida is sixth at 575 and Jacksonville is seventh at 577. Gardner-Webb is eighth at 579 and Coastal Carolina is ninth at 583, six strokes ahead of the Hokies and Rams. Elon is 12th at 603 and Furman is 13th at 604.
Due to inclement weather in the area, there will be no play on Saturday. It is hoped the final round can be played on Sunday morning, beginning at 9 a.m.
