Hokies looking to dodge weather, play well at Tar Heel Invitational
Strong regional field awaits at UNC tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team hopes to dodge inclement weather and continue its hot start to the 2016-17 season this week at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The event will be played this weekend at the par 72, 7,220-yard UNC Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This is a new event on the schedule for the Hokies. It was added last week to replace the Primland Invitational, which was canceled due to inclement weather conditions. The schedule for the Tar Heel Intercollegiate is up in the air, due to expected bad weather over the weekend in the Triangle area. Originally set for Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 8-9, the first two rounds will be played Friday, Oct. 7, weather permitting.

In the Hokies last event, Tech claimed team and individual victories at the Janney Invitational in Richmond, on Sept. 20. Tech won the team competition by 10 strokes and Joey Lane won medalist honors with a birdie on the sixth playoff hole. A week earlier, the Hokies finished second at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Charleston, West Virginia.

Leading off for the Hokies at UNC will be Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand. The newcomer has a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events. He leads the Hokies in stroke average at 68.00.

Playing second for Tech is Logan Yates. A sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, Yates is second on the team in scoring at 69.00 and has two top 10 finishes in the first two events of the season.

Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the third spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence is third in scoring average at 69.80 and second in crunch time scoring. He finished fifth at Marshall to open the season.

Playing the four spot for Tech is Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia, secured his first collegiate win at VCU in September. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer.

Drew Johnson will be in the fifth position for Tech. The senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina was 14th at Marshall and is third in crunch time scoring this season.

The field at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate will once again be a challenge for the Hokies. Along with the Hokies and host UNC, 11 other teams will compete, primarily from the Mid-Atlantic region.
