Hokies look to continue strong fall at Primland

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team looks to continue its hot start to the 2016-17 season this week at the Primland Invitational. The event will be played Monday and Tuesday at the par 72, 7,053-yard Primland Resort course in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.

The Hokies are coming of team and individual victories at the Janney Invitational in Richmond last week. Tech won the team competition by 10 strokes and Joey Lane won medalist honors with a birdie on the sixth playoff hole. A week earlier, the Hokies finished second at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Charleston, West Virginia.

Leading off for the Hokies at Primland will be Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand. The newcomer has a pair of third place finishes in his first two collegiate events. He leads the Hokies in stroke average at 68.00.

Playing second for Tech is Logan Yates. A sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, Yates is second on the team in scoring at 69.00 and has two top 10 finishes in the first two events of the season.

Mark Lawrence Jr., will play the third spot for the Hokies. A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Lawrence is third in scoring average at 69.80 and second in crunch time scoring. He finished fifth at Marshall two weeks ago.

Playing the four spot for Tech is Lane. The senior from Great Falls, Virginia secured his first collegiate win at VCU last week. He won the Virginia State Amateur and the prestigious Eastern Amateur over the summer.

Drew Johnson will be in the fifth position for Tech. The senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina was 14th at Marshall and is third in crunch time scoring this season.

The Hokies will also have Tanner Owens competing as an individual at Primland. The freshman from Milton, Tennessee has played well as an individual in each of the first two events.

The field at the Primland Invitational will once again be a challenge for the Hokies. Fellow ACC members, North Carolina and host Wake Forest will compete, as well as seven other schools from across the country.

There will be a practice round on Sunday, followed by 36-holes of competition on Monday. The final round will be played Tuesday morning. The Hokies will be grouped in the first round with UNC and Wake Forest. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via link from Golfstat.com.
