RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a two-round total of 28-under 548 and won the 2016 Janney Invitational by 10 strokes on Tuesday afternoon. The tournament, hosted by VCU, was played at the par 72, 6,957-yard Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course.
The Hokies shot a 12-under 276 on Monday and followed by a 16-under 272 on Tuesday. The second round on Monday was canceled due to torrential rain in the Richmond area.
Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia, claimed medalist honors by defeating Ryan Cole of James Madison with a birdie on the sixth playoff hole. Both competitors shot 10-under 134 for the tournament. Lane, who trailed Cole by one stroke entering the final round, carded a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to force the playoff. It is the first collegiate victory for Lane, who is the 2016 Virginia State Amateur Champion.
Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, finished in third place at 9-under 135, one stroke behind Lane and Cole. Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia, tied for seventh at 7-under 137. Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 24th place at 142 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina, tied for 49th place at 149.
Five Hokies played the event as individuals. Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton, Tennessee, tied for 45th at 148, and Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 55th at 151. Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 60th at 152, Will Duma, a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia was 71st at 155 and Dan Woodbury, a junior from Upton, Massachusetts, tied for 72nd at 157.
The Hokies have won the event four of the last five years. The 28-under is a tournament record for lowest score in regards to par in the tournament’s history. Tech last won the event in 2014 and Lane joins Scott Vincent in 2013 as the only Hokies to win medalist honors.
Tech defeated runner-up James Madison by 10 strokes and third place East Carolina by 12 strokes. Boston College was fourth at 565, Charlotte was fifth at 568 and Maryland was sixth at 569. Fourteen teams competed in the event.
The Hokies are back on the course next Monday and Tuesday. They will compete in the Primland Invitational, hosted by Wake Forest at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
