RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted an opening round 12-under 276 and has a three-stroke lead over James Madison at the Janney Invitational on Monday. The event is being played at the par 72, 6,957-yard Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course in Richmond.

The tournament, originally scheduled for 54 holes, has been shortened to 36 holes. The second round on Monday was canceled due to torrential rain. The event’s first round was suspended for about five hours on Monday.

Joey Lane, a senior from Great Falls, Virginia and Sarit Suwannarut, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, each shot 5-under 67 on Monday and are in a four-way tie for second place. They trail Ryan Cole of JMU by one stroke.

Logan Yates, a sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for eighth. Mark Lawrence Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia is tied for 33^rd at 73 and Drew Johnson, a senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina shot 75 and is tied for 46^th.

Five Hokies are playing the event as individuals. Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton, Tennessee is tied for 19^th at 71 and Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, is tied for 42^nd at 74. Will Duma, a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia, is tied for 54^th at 76, Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 64^th at 78 and Dan Woodbury, a junior from Upton, Massachusetts, is in 74^th place at 81.

The Hokies lead JMU by three strokes and East Carolina by five strokes. Iowa State is fourth at 283, Boston College is fifth at 284 and Charlotte is sixth at 285.
