BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team travel to the state capital to compete in the Janney Invitational, hosted by VCU. The 54-hole event will be played at the par 72, 6,957-yard Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course on Monday and Tuesday.

This is the second event of the season for the Hokies Tech opened play last week with a second place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in Charleston, West Virginia.

Sarit Suwannarut will lead things off for the Hokies. The freshman from Bangkok, Thailand finished tied for third at the season-opening event at in West Virginia. His opening-round 64 tied the school record, held along with Johnson Wagner and Scott Vincent.

The second spot will be occupied by Mark Lawrence, Jr. The sophomore from Richmond, Virginia transferred to Virginia Tech from Auburn following last season. He tied for second last week at Marshall and is very familiar with the host course.

Logan Yates moves into the starting line-up this week, playing in the third spot. The sophomore from Ruckersville, Virginia tied for seventh last week at Marshall while competing as an individual, with all three rounds at par-or-better. Yates led the Hokies last season at this event, in his first collegiate tournament.

Joey Lane, the senior from Great Falls, Virginia, will play in the fourth position for Tech. Last season, he led the Hokies in scoring and earned an individual invitation to the NCAA Franklin Regional outside of Nashville. Lane posted two major wins this summer, winning the Virginia State Amateur in early July and following that with a victory at the prestigious Eastern Amateur the next week.

The fifth position will feature returning starter Drew Johnson. The senior from Oak Ridge, North Carolina has been a consistent performer for the Hokies over the last three seasons and finished fourth on the team in scoring average last season. He finished 14^th at Marshall, highlighted by a final round 68.

Tech will have five players competing as individuals at VCU. Tanner Owens, a freshman from Milton, Tennessee, finished tied for 36^th last week at Marshall in his collegiate debut.

Also competing as individuals at VCU are Blake Fiest, a sophomore from Huntersville, North Carolina, Dan Woodbury, a junior from Upton, Massachusetts, Will Duma, a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia and Tom Crow, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, making his collegiate debut.

The 14-team event features a field primarily from the Mid-Atlantic area. Tech is one of two ACC teams in the field and one of six schools from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The tournament will have a practice round on Sunday. Competition begins Monday morning, beginning 36 holes of play. The final round will be played Tuesday morning. Live scoring will be available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
